Here’s a lil sum summin I wrote for The Cause over at Danwei. The comments are quite funny to follow. It’s descended into a Chinese semantics debate. (also cross-posted here)

Ha ha. Very funny The Onion. I happen to count myself as one of those “thousands of music fans who slavishly follow the website’s advice when it comes to enjoying things” and it’s been working for me so far… but point taken. I might start actually reading the reviews instead of going straight to those albums that score 8/10 or more.

Mastering Chinese Transport
I just discovered a cool function on Baidu maps that gives you traffic directions (public and private transport) when you enter your starting point and destination. Here’s the public transport directions for getting to Sanlitun from Beijing Train Station - link It works in my old hood too. Here are the routes for a trip from Youdian Apartments to Tianjin Train Station. - link (Pic shows...

It’s been a while since I’ve read any of Howard French’s China dispatches. After reading this, I’m left wondering why I’ve waited so long. In this article he provides a good summary of the latest scandals to hit China, with what I think is very measured analysis. Shooting the Airplane likey.

Dead or alive?
So apparently Song Pingshun, the Vice-Mayor of my city Tianjin, killed himself last week after coming under investigation for economic crimes. Apparently, he was found dead last Wednesday after jumping from Tianjin’s CPPCC building. Or after shooting himself. Apparently. Get a job Paul
“We love Paul but it’s time for some tough love. So we have this message. Paul, mate: shut up and listen and you might learn something. And Paul: get a job.” Friday, 8 June 2007 - Christian Kerr - www.crikey.com.au (link to story) —- I couldn’t agree more. He seemed quite unhinged and just a little pathetic on last nights’...
"Paul Merton in China" Channel 5 (UK) →
I watched the first episode of this last night. It’s a light-hearted look at contemporary China by English comic Paul Merton. It’s being shown on Channel 5 in the UK now. Merton managed to win me over when, in this first episode, he passes up an opportunity to see the Great Wall of China, and instead visits a peasant who makes his own home-made robots. Me likey. I recommend you check...

Interweb problems
My internet abruptly disconnected the other day for no apparent reason. The Internet guy was supposed to come today to sort it out but I haven’t been holding my breath. Thankfully, a cafe around the corner from my dormitory has free wireless. If my internet doesn’t get fixed for a while, I can at least get an occasional hit of interweb goodness. If anyone needs to get in contact with...
